Textual evidence: "On the other side of the page, which was blank, McCandless penned a brief adios: 'I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL'" (Krakauer 199).

Analysis:
From this quote, it can be inferred that Chris McCandless prefers a good short life rather than a bad long life. Even though he lived a very short life compared to most people during that time period, he was still extremely happy since he was able to experience so much within those few years. This is inspirational to me because most people would probably prefer the bad long life. Everyone fears death more than anything, so they would basically choose the long life even though life may be more miserable. To be honest, I would also choose the long life because the concept of death terrifies me. Chris McCandless does not fear death. He risked his life so many times to make the most out of his one life he had. He knew life was precious, so he never wasted an opportunity. As soon as he graduated from Emory college, he made the decision to experience the world and its adventures. He traveled all around the United States to truly live life to the fullest. When he made the decision to try to survive in the Alaskan wilderness with very few supplies and protection, it was basically suicide. He knew he was going to die, but he also knew that the adventure in Alaska would be enough to fulfill his life.

It's okay to be hard on yourself because it will force you to try harder
Textual Evidence: "After a bad race or even a bad time trial during practice, he could be really hard on himself. And he wouldn't want to talk about it. If I tried to console him, he'd act annoyed and brush me off. He internalized the disappointment. He'd go off alone somewhere and beat himself up" (Krakaeur 112).

Analysis:
Chris McCandless is a person who is really hard on himself. If he makes a mistake or does something poorly, he will usually punish himself severely even if the mistake or poor performance is minor. For example, Chris McCandless is a distance runner and whenever he performs bad in a race or a time trial, he will beat himself up internally. I think this example is important because it applies to everything he does in life. Chris wants to travel around the world and live in the wilderness. If he makes a wrong turn in the road or an obstacle stops him from continuing his journey, he will become very angry with himself. This anger will force him to keep trying and never give up. Many people would think of Chris McCandless as strange for punishing himself, but I think of him as an extremely inspirational man. I can relate to Chris. I am also a very competitive distance runner. I take the sport seriously just like Chris. Whenever I finish a bad race, I punish myself severely as well. It usually takes me a couple days to recover from a bad race. This also applies to school. When I get a bad grade on a test, I feel extremely depressed and angry with myself. I believe that being hard on yourself is important because it forces you to try harder and strive in life. Chris understands this concept more than anyone.

We must get up out of our couches and enjoy an adventurous life
Textual evidence:
"If you want to get more out of life, Ron, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty" (Krakauer 57).

Analysis
In today's world with all the technology you could imagine, many people are deciding to just sit down in their couch like a recluse. A life like this is definitely not worth living. Everyone only lives one life, so no one should spend that precious moment being a couch potato. Many Americans spend most of their lives indoors and not outdoors where the beautiful nature exists. This definitely needs to be changed. God has created a beautiful world for us to live in and all we are doing is ignoring his generosity. We must all step outside and explore nature. Look around at all the beautiful things nature provides. At first this may seem crazy, but eventually you will understand the actual meaning of living and the true beauty of life. Chris McCandless understands this issue and wants everyone to adventure outdoors and experience the true life. In my opinion, Chris' thoughts and ideas are very inspirational to me. Most people rely on the social construction in America. They follow society and do things the way everyone does. Chris on the other hand wants to avoid society and simply enjoy nature. I agree with Chris. I believe that we all need to spend more time outside and admire the outdoors. We don't need to go to the extremes like Chris did, but we definitely need to show more appreciation to the actual world, which is nature, rather than our concealed homes. Everyone is gifted with one life, so they should all make the most of it.
